Baltimore City: ‘Autism Basics’

STAR Sharing Treatment and Autism Resources

This presentation will explain the general definition of autism and provide basic information about what it is like to have an autism spectrum disorder.  Strengths and challenges for people on the spectrum will be discussed and tips for how to have the most meaningful interactions with individuals with autism will be given.

Participants will be able to state the general definition of autism and list core characteristics.

This presentation will provide basic information to extended family members, babysitters, nannies, etc. about autism and the challenges associated with autism, as well as how to interact with individuals who have autism.

Presenter:  Catherine Walton, MED, SLP-A

Catherine is an Early Intervention Specialist II at the Center for Autism and Related Disorders at Kennedy Krieger Institute.  She oversees and leads a group in the Early Achievements early intervention program.  She also provides technical assistance and trainings on autism to parents, professionals, university students, school and community groups.
