Baltimore County, Towson: ‘NAMI Maryland Annual Conference’

October 17, 2015

The NAMI Maryland Annual Conference is about hope, ideas, and gaining new skills.  Here’s your chance to learn about the latest research, discover resources that you may not have known were there, develop a talent for advocacy, and foster a better understanding of issues relating to mental illness.

We invite individuals with mental illness, families, faith leaders, community members, students, health care providers and criminal justice professionals to join in the conversation.

We have a wide range of topics being covered over the two days including

Substance Use and Recovery

Featured workshops:

”Addiction, Treatment and Recovery – Parts 1 and 2”

Yngvild Olsen, Medical Director, Institutes for Behavior Resources

The first part of a 2-part workshop will highlight the science of addiction and

review the screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment model and how this fits with a recovery oriented approach to care.  New language and terminology related to substance use disorders will also be discussed.

The second part of the workshop will focus on the different treatment options for substance use disorders, with a particular focus on opiod and alcohol use disorders.  The science behind medications as part of treatment for these condisions will be reviewed and best practices described.

”Opiod Overdose Response Training”

Emily Heinlein, MPH, Director of Public Health Initiatives, BHS Baltimore

Participants will learn to recognize and respond to an opioid overdose – including performing recue breathing and administering naloxone, which reverses the life-threatening effects of opioid overdose. Participants will receive a certificate allowing them to obtain a naloxone prescription.

”Back to the Future: Understanding Maryland’s Recovery Oriented Systems of Care”

John Winslow, Program Director, Dorchester County Addictions Program

This workshop will inform participants of the value in improving outcomes as a result of Maryland’s embracing the Recovery Oriented Systems of Care concept.

For the past 5 years Maryland has been transitioning to a ”new” way of understanding addiction treatment and achieving more successful outcomes. Learn from an early adapter who has helped the state move forward in embracing this valuable concept.

”The Value of Integrating Peer Recovery Support Services”

John Winslow, Program Director, Dorchester County Addictions Program

Learn what steps the Dri-Dock Recovery & Wellness Center have taken to offer combined mental health and addiction peer services in their center and with their many partners throughout the community.  Information will be disseminated to workshop participants regarding best practices, community supports and services, co-occurring substance use concerns, and behavioral health integration at the state and local levels.
