The Howard County Autism Society (HCAS), on behalf of the Howard County Transition Outreach Partnership, invites you to the Howard County’s 6thAnnual Transition Symposium, Stop Waiting and Start Planning on Saturday, November 9, 2019 from 8:00am to 3:15pm at Wilde Lake Middle School located at 10481 Cross Fox Lane, Columbia, MD 21044.
The Transition Symposium is presented by the Howard County Transition Outreach Partnership, a collaborative effort of Accessible Resources for Independence, The Arc of Howard County, Howard County Autism Society, Howard County Health Department, Howard County Public School System, Howard County Government (Community Resources and Services and Health Department), and NAMI Howard County. It offers the knowledge, skills, and resources needed for a successful transition to post-high school employment, education and independent living. The target audience is transitioning youth with all types of disabilities, ages 14 to 24, along with their parents and family members, human service professionals, and educators.
The Symposium will feature a keynote presentation by Dr. Josie Badger, PhD, DHCE, CRC, and her mother, Joan Badger. Dr. Badger received her Bachelor’s degree from Geneva College in Disability Law and Advocacy, a Master’s from the University of Pittsburgh in Rehabilitation Counseling, and a Doctorate from Duquesne University in Healthcare Ethics. She was crowned Ms. Wheelchair America in 2012. In 2014, she founded J. Badger Consulting, Inc., providing consulting services on transition and leadership development. Dr. Badger and her mother will discuss what “growing up” looked like for a family with high expectations for their daughter with a disability within the complicated, inaccessible, and often scary path to adulthood.
A variety of breakout sessions will highlight topics of interest to transition-age youth with disabilities and the individuals who support them, including:
- DDA Services
- Transition Planning
- Vocational Planning
- DORS services
- Mental Health Services
- Sessions for Transitioning Youth
