Howard County, Columbia: “Make it Routine: Connecting Communication, Schedules, and Literacy”

Presenters”  Julie Durando, Ph.D. and Ira Padhye, M.Ed from Virginia Project for Children & Young Adults with Deafblindness at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU)

Recent research confirms that learners with multiple disabilities and deaf-blindness, no matter their age, benefit when literacy concepts are built from frequent, meaningful experiences. This presentation will discuss reasons and strategies to connect communication, object schedules, and literacy related experiences to daily routines and regular school activities. Specific attention will be given to students with sensory loss combined with physical challenges and cognitive delays.  Ideas for teachers to use with learners of all ages will be shared with picture and video examples.

If you have a team of at least three professionals and one family member that is interested in collaborating with our experts around literacy for a specific student please contact Donna Riccobono at donnaric@umd.edu. Not open to all participants.

Please register for Saturday November 5 by sending an email to Donna Riccobono. This is a time to work collaboratively with your team and the workshop presenters in enhancing the students current literacy program.
*Location: JHU / CTE room 218 / 219
*The registration fee will be collected at the door. *CEU / CPD will not be offered however the information needed to apply for CEU / CPD will be provided such as; presenters resume, presenters bio, agenda, etc.
*If you need an interpreter and / or accommodations, please notify us ASAP or before October 15.
*Parking is free!
*Lunch will be provided! If you have food allergies, please inform Donna ASAP.
