Mental Health & Autism: Panel Discussion

September 24, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Howard County Autism Society is very excited to present this month’s Monthly Speaker Series Topic, Mental Health and Autism: A Panel Discussion, to take place on Tuesday, September 24th from 7:00PM-9:00PM at HCAS at 9770 Patuxent Woods Drive, Columbia, MD 21045.

The event will explore the intersection of mental health and autism spectrum disorders (ASD), including educating the community about the high frequency of co-occurring mental health disorders and ASD, increasing awareness of what common mental disorders may look like with those with ASD, offering strategies to effectively manage a mental health crisis, and providing information about local resources. The panel will consist of a range of people with professional and/or personal experience researching, treating, supporting, or having experienced a mental health crisis of their own or a mental health crisis of a family member.

Confirmed panelists include Luther Kalb, PhD, an epidemiologist and assistant professor at Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; Denise Giuliano, Executive Director of NAMI of Howard County ; Cindy Kirk, CPSP, a Family Peer Support Specialist with the Maryland Coalition of Families; and Matthew Plantz, a self advocate for people with disabilities and autism who is involved with numerous local organizations.

The event is free to attend.  No pre-registration is required. Made possible through the generous support of The Horizon Foundation.
